THE BAND
An acoustic cajun trio based in north west Wales
Pon' Bro pump out traditional Louisiana Cajun two-steps and waltzes, along with some Cajun blues and old-time Creole tunes. Bring some Louisiana passion and heat to your north Wales bistro, party, wedding or other event.
The songs
Mostly in French, the songs tell of life events that we can all connect with: love and heart-break; good times, music, dancing and drunkenness after a week of hard work; and, yes, the final farewell. Don't be fooled by the cheery tones of the music - the words often tell a different story!
The three band members
Frances on accordion, Nick on fiddle and Owen on guitar have been playing together in various formats for over 20 years including as 'Tite Fille & the Acadians, Zarico, and with Cajuns Denbo,
Their musical backgrounds encompass blues, folk, jazz and latin. The band's Cajun influences include the Balfas, Canray Fontenot, Octa Clarke and Sheryl Cormier.
Cajun & Welsh
Based in Gwynedd, the heartland of the Welsh language, Pon' Bro have rewritten some verses in Welsh. Cajun French and Welsh have surprising historical parallels; while Welsh children were punished at school for speaking Welsh in an attempt to make English the dominant language, Cajun school children in Louisiana were similarly punished for speaking French. Music and song have played an important role in safeguarding both these cultures' languages and identity.
Cajun music is for dancing
Feel free to do your own thing! or if you want to enjoy the music with a partner, Frances will be happy to introduce you to the simple steps of the 2-step or Cajun waltz.
